What gives us the Magento by default? As you can see from the screenshots, the standard menu of the site fully inherits the directory tree structure (hierarchy). The child categories of the tree are displayed on the site in the form of sub-items drop down or side.
In order o show the category in the menu, simply select the switch ?Include in Navigation Menu? to ?Yes?. In order to change the order of the sub-categories output or levels of their nesting, you should select the sub-category icon in the tree with the mouse, and move it to a new location holding the left mouse button (Drag & Drop). The solution is simple and quite elegant.
But the downside in this case is the total binding categories to the existing hierarchy, the inability to create the own menu items that are not related to a directory, to do a breakdown into the columns, to add promotional banners and much more significant drawbacks. For example, I cannot add my own link to a static page without the help of programmer.
Visiting the large online shops (Figure 3), you?ll notice that the menu may contain pictures, description of the sections, announcements of events taking place or even links to the goods except for links to the category. In addition, the neighboring items can be different by their structure. One, two or three columns, a few lines in various combinations depending on the specifics of the online shop or the specific section. All this is done in order to menu favours the sales of the online shop at the maximum extent. As it is the element, which any visitor uses!
The menu should be dynamic, flexible and easy to manage in order to increase the sales. Otherwise, it will be necessary to invite the programmer constantly for endless corrections of the site. Agree ? it is not very comfortable and expensive.
