How to configure cross-links

This page describes how to configure cross-links. Cross-links help improve SEO and user experience by strategically linking relevant content within a single website or across multiple domains. When implemented correctly, cross-linking can boost rankings, reduce bounce rates, and enhance the overall website structure. However, it's crucial to ensure that cross-links are natural, relevant, and not excessive, as overuse may be seen as manipulative by search engines.

To create a cross-link, go to Marketing -> Cross-links and click Add new link button.

1. Define mandatory information

Set a Keyword — the word to which the link is added. Whenever the defined keyword appears in the text, it will automatically become a link. Specify the store views where this cross-link can appear using the Visible in store view configuration.

Select how the destination URL is resolved using the Link type field:

  • Custom URL — enter the target URL directly in the URL field. Use this for external URLs or any path that does not correspond to a product or category.
  • Product by ID — enter a product ID in the Entity ID field. The destination URL is resolved automatically from the product's current URL rewrite, so the link remains valid even if the product's URL key is changed later.
  • Category by ID — enter a category ID in the Entity ID field. The destination URL is resolved automatically from the category's current URL rewrite.
Finding entity IDs

Product and category IDs are visible in the URL when editing them in the admin panel (e.g. .../catalog/product/edit/id/42/), or in the ID column of their respective admin grids.

3. Configure general information

Choose how the targeted page will open with the URL target selector. If necessary, define URL title (the text appearing when hovering over the keyword), Number of substitutions (how many occurrences on the page will act as links) and select Occurrence (the direction of the search for keyword replacements). To prevent search crawlers from following the link, enable the Nofollow option. If there are two cross-links with the same keyword, define the Sort order. Enable this cross-link by switching the Is active slider to Yes. Optionally, set a time limit by specifying dates in the Active from and Active to fields.

4. Implement changes

Click the Save button and clean the Magento cache to ensure the cross-link has been applied to your store's pages. The saved cross-link is automatically added to the cross-links list, where it can be selected and edited. Refer to the cross-links manager page for a full description of all configuration options.
