How to manage conversation history
Copilot keeps a history of your past conversations so you can reopen and continue them. You can rename or remove conversations, and the store can set a retention period after which old conversations are deleted automatically.
Open the conversation history
-
Open Copilot and click the conversations icon in the chat header.
-
The history panel lists your conversations grouped by last activity, with a search field at the top. Each row shows when the conversation was created and when it was last active. When a retention period is set, a note at the top states how long conversations are kept.
Each admin user sees only their own conversations.
Rename a conversation
-
Open the conversation history.
-
Open the actions menu (the ⋮ icon) on the conversation's row and choose Rename.
-
Enter a new name and click Save.
Conversations are named automatically from their first message; renaming lets you give one your own name.
Delete a conversation
-
Open the conversation history.
-
Open the actions menu (the ⋮ icon) on the conversation's row and choose Delete.
-
Confirm the deletion in the dialog that appears.
The conversation and its data are permanently removed from the Copilot server. If you delete the conversation that is currently open in the chat, Copilot clears it and returns to the welcome screen.
A conversation can only be deleted by the admin user who created it.
Set an automatic retention period
Old conversations can be deleted automatically after a fixed number of days. This is configured once for the whole store on the Behavior tab of the widget configuration panel — see Widget configuration.
- Set Conversation history retention to the number of days to keep each conversation. The period is measured from the conversation's last activity.
- Set it to
0to keep conversations indefinitely (the default).
The cleanup runs once per day, so changing the value does not remove old conversations immediately — they are removed on the next daily cleanup.
