ChatGPT supports MCP servers through the Apps feature.
Developer mode is available on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, but full MCP support - tools that can change store data - is currently limited to Business, Enterprise and Edu. On Plus and Pro, ChatGPT connects to your store but only offers the tools it classifies as read-only.
Plan requirements change often - check the OpenAI developer mode documentation for the current position.
ChatGPT treats a tool as a write action unless the server marks it read-only, and write actions are restricted both by plan (above) and, on Business and Enterprise workspaces, by a per-app setting: Workspace settings -> Apps -> your app -> Action control, which can allow all actions or read actions only. Only a workspace owner or admin can change it.
AI Agent Connector 1.1.14 marks every read-only tool as such, so the nine look-only tools stay available in a read-restricted workspace. On earlier versions no tool carried the marking, so a workspace limited to read actions was offered none of them. See Built-in tools for which tools are read-only.
If your store is behind Cloudflare or another CDN/WAF, you must whitelist the MCP endpoints before connecting. Without this, you will get "RFC 7951" or "does not implement OAuth" errors. See Protected stores for step-by-step instructions.
Prerequisites
- Go to Settings -> Apps -> Advanced settings and enable Developer mode.
Create App
- Go to Settings -> Apps and click Create app.
- Set the app Name to your store name or server key (shown on the MCP Info tab in Magento admin).
- Set the MCP Server URL to the URL from the MCP Info tab.
- Set Authentication to OAuth. Skip optional fields.
- Check "I understand and want to continue" and click Create.
- Complete the authentication steps in the browser.
Usage
- Open a new chat in ChatGPT.
- Click the "+" button near the message composer, click More, and select your app.
