How to earn different points per bundle option

Bundle products need a different setup from simple products when you want a different earning rate depending on the options a customer selects. This guide explains how cart earning rules see bundle products and gives a setup that rates each bundle in the cart on its own.

How cart earning rules see a bundle product

A bundle product in the cart is one bundle item with its selected options as items under it. The Conditions and Actions tabs of a cart rule look at different items:

  • Conditions decide whether the rule applies to the cart as a whole. A Product attribute combination condition also checks the selected options of a bundle, so a condition on an option's SKU or attribute can match.
  • Actions (Apply the rule only to cart items matching the following conditions) decide which cart items the rule awards points for. They check only the bundle item itself, never its selected options. An action condition on an option's SKU or attribute never matches, and the bundle earns 0 points from that rule.

Once the conditions of a rule are met, its rate applies to every item that its Actions accept, not only to the item that matched the condition. For example, a 2x rule with the condition "an item with option B is found" also awards 2x for a bundle in the same cart that has only option A.

warning

Don't use the Conditions tab to pick a rate per bundle, and don't use Stop further rules processing for it either. Stop further rules processing stops the remaining rules for the whole cart, so the other bundles in the cart don't earn points from them.

1. Choose what tells the bundles apart

In the Actions tab, filter on something the bundle item itself carries that changes with the selected options. The price of the bundle in the cart works well: it depends on the options the customer selected.

For example, a bundle has two options:

  • Option A only: $34.
  • Option B only: $45.
  • Options A and B: $79.

Bundles with option B cost $35 or more, and bundles with option A only cost less than $35.

2. Create the rule for the higher rate

  • Go to Marketing -> Promotions -> Reward Points -> Earning Rules and press Add New.
  • In General Information, select the Cart rule type, set Priority to 10, and set Stop further rules processing to No.
  • In the Actions tab, add the condition Base Price equals or greater than 35.
  • In the Tiers tab, select Give X points for every spent Y, set Number of points (X) to 2 and Step (Y) to 1.
  • Press Save.

3. Create the rule for the lower rate

  • Create a second cart rule the same way, with Priority set to 20 and Stop further rules processing set to No.
  • In the Actions tab, add the condition Base Price less than 35.
  • In the Tiers tab, set Number of points (X) to 1 and Step (Y) to 1.
  • Press Save.

4. Check the result

Each bundle in the cart now earns at the rate of the rule whose Actions it matches. With one bundle with options A and B ($79) and one bundle with option A only ($34) in the cart, the customer earns 79 × 2 + 34 × 1 = 192 points.

note

The amount each rule counts follows your earning settings for tax, discounts and shipping in Configuration settings, so the actual points may differ from this example.
