Custom Order Number for Magento 2
Default Magento order numbers are plain sequential IDs that tell customers nothing and reveal how many orders your store gets.

Default Magento order numbers are plain sequential IDs like 000001254. They mean nothing to customers, and anyone who places two orders can see how many orders your store gets in between.
Custom Order Number replaces them with your own patterns: a prefix and suffix, the date, counters with their own start, step and padding, and random digits. Set patterns for orders, invoices, shipments and credit memos, and preview each one before you save.

Don't reveal your order count
Magento adds one to the order number with every new purchase. A competitor who orders twice a month can subtract one number from the other and know how many orders you got in that time.
A custom pattern hides this. Start the counter from a large number, increase it by a step bigger than one, or add random digits to every number. You can also build numbers without a sequential counter at all.
A pattern also makes numbers easier to read: with the date and a document prefix in it, a customer or a support agent can tell at a glance what the document is and when it was created.
Flexible patterns for order, invoice, shipment and credit memo numbers
Build the pattern from text and variables. For example, a pattern made of the prefix ORD, the day, month and year, and a five-digit counter gives numbers like ORD-08-10-26-00125.
Pattern-based numbers help in several ways:
- customers can easily spot your orders in their mailbox
- numbers can follow your accounting or local legal rules for invoices, or the format an external order system expects
- after a migration from another platform, you can keep the numbering style you already use
Invoices, shipments and credit memos can reuse the order number with a different prefix, for example INV instead of ORD, or get a pattern of their own. Each store view can have a separate pattern. If a generated number already exists, a suffix such as -1 is added, so numbers never repeat.
Counters and variables for ID numbers
Create as many named counters as you need and set the start value, step and padding of each. Padding sets the number of digits: with padding 5, the counter shows 00125, which keeps numbers the same length for exports to other systems.
There are 16 built-in variables:
- Time: hours in 12- or 24-hour format, minutes, AM/PM.
- Date: day, month and year with or without leading zeros, and a two- or four-digit year.
- Random numbers from one to four digits, the store ID and, for documents, the order number.
Preview every pattern before you use it
Use one pattern for all documents so they look consistent, or give each document type its own. The settings show a preview of the next number for orders, invoices, shipments and credit memos, so you see the result before the first customer does.
Each document type can be turned off separately to go back to Magento's default numbering. To fix the number of a single order, change it in the Order Editor.
