Which Magento 2 Order Management Extension Is Best?

Two questions decide the pick

First, whether one extension covers the order editor, the order grid and custom order numbers, or you buy them one by one. Second, what the editor does once an order is already invoiced and paid.

1. One extension, or a set of separate ones

Mirasvit and MageWorx sell order management as one extension. Amasty and Mageplaza sell the editor, the extended grid and custom order numbers separately, so the same three jobs cost $457 at Amasty and $477 at Mageplaza, against $149 at Mirasvit and $199 at MageWorx (whose custom order numbers are a free extra).

2. What happens after the invoice

Editing a pending order is easy for every editor here. The difference shows when the customer has already paid: some editors stop at pending orders, some re-authorize the card for the new total, and some send the customer a link to pay the difference. Check what the editor does when the total goes up, and what you do by hand when it goes down.

Magento itself can't edit a placed order: its admin "Edit" button cancels the order and creates a new one (see FAQ).

Where each one earns its place

Mirasvit Order Management: the editor, grid, numbers and tags in one extension

Six admin tools in one extension: Order Editor, Extended Order Grid, Custom Order Number, Order Tags, Order Timeline and Quick View. $149 on Open Source, $318 on Adobe Commerce, $568 on Cloud.

Strengths

  • Edit the order page one section at a time (items, prices, tax rate and discount per line, coupon, shipping method and price, payment method, customer, shipping address) and preview the recalculated totals before saving
  • When an invoiced order's total goes up, the customer gets an email with a link to pay the difference, and the payment is invoiced automatically
  • A timeline on each order shows which admin changed what, with the old and new values
  • Order tags assigned by hand or by rules (order, customer, address, product and payment gateway data), with colored grid rows
  • Custom numbers for orders, invoices, shipments and credit memos; merge and split orders; mass invoice, ship and delete from the grid
  • Separate admin permissions for each action, and a REST API for the editor, grid and tags

Its limits

  • No custom order statuses or status emails
  • Customers can't edit orders themselves; editing is for admins
  • When the total goes down, the refund is a standard credit memo you create by hand
  • Complete, closed and canceled orders are locked for editing by default

MageWorx Order Management: edits invoiced orders and re-authorizes the payment

$199 for Open Source and $398 for Adobe Commerce, renewing at 40% off. The Order Editor ($149) and the Extended Orders Grid ($99) are also sold on their own.

Strengths

  • An extended grid with 28 extra columns, 20 mass actions and order deletion
  • Edit logs, webhooks and a REST API

Its limits

  • Re-authorization covers PayPal and Braintree only
  • Custom order numbers are a separate (free) extension

Amasty: customer self-editing, statuses and archive as separate extensions

Order Editor $169, Extended Order Grid $129, Order Status $149, Custom Order Number $159, Order Archive $169 and Mass Order Actions $189 on Open Source, each with 12 months of updates and support. Combos of three get 15% off.

  • Order Status adds custom statuses with an email template for each one
  • Order Archive moves old orders out of the grid on a schedule

  • Can create new offline invoices and cancel invoices, shipments and credit memos after an edit
  • Supports Magento 2.4.4 to 2.4.9 and Hyvä

Its limits

  • Beyond customer and address details, an order can be edited only while it's pending
  • Better Order Grid was last updated in August 2023

Editor-only extensions: MageComp, Webkul and Magefan

  • MageComp Order Editor ($79, $228 for Adobe Commerce): quantities, prices, discounts, addresses and shipping or payment methods, with a year of updates and support. Limit: editor only, and the vendor doesn't state what happens to invoiced orders.
  • Webkul Order Edit ($179, $358 for Adobe Commerce): order edits with a log of changes. Limit: the price includes three months of support; a year costs extra.
  • Magefan Order Editor: order edits with edit logs and limits by order status and admin role. Limit: editor only; grid and order numbers need other extensions.

Custom order numbers on their own

If numbering is the only job, a dedicated extension is enough: MageWorx Custom Order Number is free, Mageplaza's is $149 a year and Amasty's is $159. All three cover orders, invoices, shipments and credit memos. Mirasvit includes custom numbers in Order Management, with named counters and a preview of each template.

Frequently asked questions

Which Magento 2 order management extension is best?

It depends on how many order jobs you need. For the editor, the extended grid, custom order numbers and tags in one extension, Mirasvit Order Management costs $149. If you edit invoiced orders paid through PayPal or Braintree and want the card re-authorized, choose MageWorx Order Management ($199). If customers should edit their own orders, choose Amasty Order Editor ($169). For the editor alone at the lowest price, MageComp Order Editor is $79.

Can you edit an order in Magento 2 without an extension?

No. The "Edit" button on an admin order cancels the original order and creates a new one with a new number, which needs its own payment. You can change the billing and shipping address and add comments without an extension, but items, prices, discounts and methods need an order editor.

Can you edit an order after it's invoiced?

With most editors, yes, but the payment is the hard part. Mirasvit emails the customer a link to pay the difference when the total goes up. MageWorx re-authorizes the new total for PayPal and Braintree. Mageplaza edits items and payment only while the order is pending, and Amasty's editor works only with authorize-only payments. When the total goes down, you issue a credit memo for the difference.

Which extension adds custom order statuses?

Magento already lets you create custom statuses under Stores > Order Status and assign them to an order state, but it sends no email when an order moves to one. Amasty Order Status ($149) adds an email template for each status. Mirasvit Order Management lets you set any existing status on an order, but doesn't create statuses or status emails. For the full list of default statuses and how states work, see our guide to Magento 2 order statuses.

What is the best custom order number extension for Magento 2?

MageWorx Custom Order Number is free and covers orders, invoices, shipments and credit memos. Mageplaza ($149 a year) and Amasty ($159) add more counter options. If you also need an order editor and grid, Mirasvit Order Management includes custom numbers for $149.

Can I delete test orders in Magento 2?

Not from the default admin. Mirasvit and MageWorx Order Management both add a delete action to the order grid, and Amasty includes deletion in Order Archive. Deleting removes the order with its invoices, shipments and credit memos, so export anything you need for accounting first.

Does editing an order email the customer?

It depends on the extension. Mageplaza can send the customer an updated order email after each edit. Mirasvit sends an email only when there's a difference to pay, with a payment link; other changes are not emailed.
