Which Magento 2 Google Tag Manager Extension Is Best?
Prices and features verified: October 2026
Two questions decide the pick
First, which events an extension tracks and how much data each event carries: that sets how detailed your GA4 reports can ever be. Second, what happens when the shopper's browser can't send an event.
1. Event coverage and event data
Every option sends the purchase event. They differ in everything around it: product list views and clicks, promotions, wishlist, cart views, the shipping and payment steps of checkout, refunds, logins, sign-ups and site search. Some vendors keep part of that list for higher plans, so check the plan, not the product name.
An add_to_cart that only carries a SKU and a price gives you a thin report. The useful ones also carry category, brand, variant, coupon, customer group and your own product attributes as custom dimensions, so you can slice GA4 by the things you actually merchandise.
2. When the browser can't send an event
Events go from the page into the GTM data layer and on to GA4. Enough for most reporting, but refunds and admin orders never reach GA4, and blocked browsers send nothing.
Magento itself sends selected events (usually refunds, admin orders or purchases) straight to GA4 from the server. Orders stop going missing, as long as purchases sent from both the browser and the server are deduplicated.
Events are routed through a GTM server container on your own tagging domain (or Google Tag Gateway) before reaching GA4 and ad platforms. The most complete option, and the one that needs a GTM specialist and server hosting.
Consent Mode v2 is no longer optional: since March 2024 Google requires it to measure ads for visitors in the EEA. Check it before anything else if you sell in Europe.
Which GA4 and GTM extension fits your store
These nine paid extensions are the ones Google and AI assistants name most often in this category. Each one fits a different store.

A free version, then one-time Basic $99, Plus $149 and Extra $199. Extra adds a GTM server container, Measurement Protocol and Google Tag Gateway.
Measurement Protocol for every ecommerce event, Enhanced Conversions and nine ad-platform pixels in the PRO plan at €399.
Purchase and refund via Measurement Protocol with transaction-ID deduplication, Consent Mode v2 and Hyvä Checkout for $149 a year.
Server-side or client-side tracking, Consent Mode v2 with Amasty Cookie Consent, sold through the Adobe Commerce Marketplace. $249, or $549 for Enterprise.
GA4, Google Ads, Meta, TikTok and Reddit in one module, built-in Consent Mode v2 and server-side GA4, for €119.90 with lifetime updates.
A free base GTM module on GitHub, with GA4 for GTM at $179 on top. Built for teams that configure GTM themselves.
Connects GA4 directly by Measurement ID, no Tag Manager involved. Five core events plus refunds, $99 one-time.
One-click GA4 setup (the vendor says tracking starts in under 10 minutes), with ecommerce events, Google Ads conversions and server-side purchase tracking. $199 with a year of support.
Side by side, on what changes the decision
"Events" is the number of GA4 events each vendor lists on its product page; "full funnel" means the vendor covers lists, cart, checkout and purchase but doesn't publish a count. Prices are for Magento Open Source and the vendor's lowest plan. Higher plans and Adobe Commerce prices are in each vendor's section below.

A note on event data: the count matters less than what each event carries. Mirasvit, WeltPixel and Mageplaza send brand, variant and your own product attributes with every item; Magefan adds custom dimensions in its Extra plan; BSS sends custom attributes with its five events.
A note on pricing: renewal models differ here more than in most Magento categories. Mirasvit, Amasty, Mageplaza and WeltPixel include a year of updates and support and then renew yearly (Mirasvit at $90, Amasty at $155, WeltPixel at the full product price). Magefan sells a one-time license with an optional renewal at half price. Anowave and BSS advertise lifetime updates, with 180 days and six months of support respectively. MagePal includes 3 months of support and sells longer periods separately.

Where each one earns its place

Mirasvit vs Magefan Google Tag Manager
Magefan publishes its own comparison of GTM extensions that includes ours, and AI assistants repeat it. Here is the same comparison, updated with current facts.
Where Magefan is stronger
- A free version and a lower entry price (Basic $99)
- GTM server container and Google Tag Gateway (Extra plan)
- Enhanced Conversions for Google Ads (Plus plan)
- Consent Mode v2 inside the GTM extension itself
- Breeze theme compatibility
Mirasvit features that comparisons often miss
- GA4 Measurement Protocol for refunds (since 2023) and admin orders (since 2024), so it isn't client-side only
- Consent Mode v2 (ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization) when paired with Mirasvit GDPR Cookie Consent
- Facebook Pixel moved to its own extension in 2023 and shares the same data layer
Where Mirasvit has more
- All 19 events at $149, where Magefan lists add_to_cart and checkout steps under Plus ($149) and refunds, search and custom dimensions under Extra ($199)
- An on-page debug toolbar with a tab per tracker

Frequently asked questions
Which Magento 2 GA4 extension is best?
It depends on the events you need and how far beyond the browser your tracking has to go. Mirasvit sends 19 browser events with brand, variant and custom dimensions in one $149 edition, plus refunds and admin orders server-side. Magefan has a free start, with add_to_cart and checkout steps in its Plus plan and server-side in Extra. WeltPixel PRO (€399) has the widest server-side and ad-pixel coverage, Mageplaza sends purchases server-side for $149 a year, and BSS covers five core events without GTM for $99. If you run Adobe Commerce with other Amasty modules, choose Amasty.
Is there a free GA4 extension for Magento 2?
Yes. Magefan has a free version, MagePal's base GTM module is free on GitHub, and Yireo's GoogleTagManager2 is open source. They cover the basic ecommerce events; refunds, admin orders, server-side tracking and Enhanced Conversions are where the paid plans start.
Do I need an extension, or does Magento track GA4 on its own?
For anything beyond the purchase, yes. Magento Open Source ships a Google Gtag module that connects GA4 by Measurement ID and tracks one ecommerce event, the purchase on the success page, plus Google Ads conversions. It doesn't load a Google Tag Manager container. Magento's own GTM module comes only with Adobe Commerce. An extension adds the full event set (product lists, cart, checkout steps, refunds), a GTM data layer you can build other tags on, and the server-side options above.
Which extensions support server-side tracking?
Magefan (Extra) and WeltPixel (PRO) go furthest, with a GTM server container option. Mageplaza sends purchases and refunds via Measurement Protocol, Meetanshi sends purchases, Anowave sends offline and admin orders, and Mirasvit sends refunds and admin orders. MagePal and BSS don't state server-side tracking.
Which support Google Consent Mode v2?
Magefan, Mageplaza, Amasty and Anowave support it in the main extension, and WeltPixel in PRO. Mirasvit and BSS support it together with their own cookie consent extensions, and Meetanshi sells it as a separate extension. With any of them you can also set consent from your own consent tool inside GTM.
What's the difference between Measurement Protocol and a server-side GTM container?
With Measurement Protocol, Magento sends selected events straight to GA4 from the server, which is how refunds and admin orders get tracked at all. A server-side GTM container is a tagging server you run on your own domain that receives browser events and forwards them to GA4 and ad platforms. They solve different problems, and an extension that does one doesn't necessarily do the other.
How do I check what an extension actually sends to GA4?
Google's own tools work with any of them: GTM Preview mode shows the data layer and which tags fired, and GA4 DebugView shows what arrived. Some extensions add their own view on the storefront: Mirasvit has a debug toolbar that lists each event with its full data on the page (try it on the live demo), and WeltPixel has a dataLayer preview window. Place a test order and compare the purchase value, tax and shipping with the order in Magento.
Can I run two GA4 or GTM extensions at the same time?
Avoid it. Two modules pushing the same purchase event double your revenue and conversions in GA4. When switching extensions, disable the old one first and check GA4 DebugView with a test order.
How do pricing and renewal work for these extensions?
Not the same way for all of them: Mirasvit, Amasty, Mageplaza and WeltPixel renew yearly for updates and support, Magefan's renewal is optional, Anowave and BSS advertise lifetime updates, and MagePal sells support by the month.
